Stainless Steel 310 is a medium carbon austenitic stainless steel that is widely used for high temperature applications. With its ability to withstand temperatures up to 1150°C in continuous service, and 1035°C in intermittent service, it has become a popular choice for many industrial processes such as furnace parts, heat treatment equipment and fluidised bed combustors. It also has many other applications such as kilns, radiant tubes, tube hangers for petroleum refining and steam boilers, coal gasifier internal components, lead pots, thermowells, refractory anchor bolts, burners and combustion chambers, retorts and muffles.
One of the primary benefits of Stainless Steel 310 is its resistance to corrosion. Due to its high chromium content of around 25%, it offers excellent corrosion resistance from acidic environments such as sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid. Because of this benefit it is particularly used for fuel burning applications like furnace parts and coal gasifier components. In addition to this it also has good weldability characteristics so can be easily welded with conventional methods without any pre- or post-weld heat treatment required.
The low carbon version of Grade 310 Stainless Steel called Grade 310S provides better resistance to oxidation at higher temperatures then Grade 310 due to the lower level of carbon present in the material. This makes it suitable for use in applications such as annealing covers where higher temperatures may be encountered during use.
M B Metal India has a wide range of Products like Ss 310 Sheet, Ss 310 Round Bars, Ss 310 Seamless Pipes & Tubes, Ss 310 Coil.
Stainless Steel 310 Chemical Composition
Stainless Steel 310 is composed of an alloy containing around 25% chromium, 24% nickel and 19-22% iron, as well as small amounts of silicon and manganese. The combination of these elements produces an alloy with superior corrosion resistance to many organic and inorganic compounds, making it a popular choice for high temperature applications.
The addition of low levels of carbon to the alloy also increases its toughness and strength at elevated temperatures. As such, Grade 310S is often used for applications that require good strength at higher temperatures such as annealing covers. The addition of silicon also improves the oxidation resistance of the steel, providing additional protection from corrosive environments.
Aside from its excellent corrosion resistance properties, Stainless Steel 310 is also known for its high tensile strength, which makes it suitable for use in structural components that are subjected to tension or stress. Additionally, its high thermal conductivity enables efficient heat transfer between components and can improve energy efficiency in processes such as heat exchange or chemical reactions.
Overall, Stainless Steel 310 offers a great balance of mechanical properties while still retaining exceptional corrosion resistance when exposed to various acids and gases commonly found in industrial environments. Its versatility makes it a popular choice for many applications requiring superior performance under extreme temperatures and conditions.
Stainless Steel 310 Application
Stainless Steel 310 has a variety of applications across a wide range of industries. Its excellent corrosion resistance makes it suitable for use in the chemical and petrochemical industries, where exposure to corrosive substances is commonplace. Other industries that rely on the superior properties of Stainless Steel 310 include oil and gas exploration, automotive manufacturing, aerospace engineering.

Stainless steel stains less easily than other iron-based metals, but it’s not literally “stainless”. Just like standard steel, stainless can get marked up by fingerprints and grease, develop discoloration, and eventually rust. The difference is resilience. Stainless steel can withstand much more time and abuse before showing signs of wear.
All steels have the same basic iron and carbon composition, but stainless steel also contains a healthy dose of chromium—the alloy that gives stainless steel its famous corrosion resistance.
Stainless steel must contain at least 10.5 percent chromium. Depending on the grade, it may contain much higher chromium levels, and additional alloying ingredients like molybdenum, nickel, titanium, aluminum, copper, nitrogen, phosphorous and selenium.
The two most common stainless steel grades are 304 and 316. The key difference is the addition of molybdenum, an alloy which drastically enhances corrosion resistance, especially for more saline or chloride-exposed environments. 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, but 304 doesn’t.
For outdoor furnishings like rails and bollards, stainless steel is an ideal corrosion-resistant material, but it will only withstand long-term exposure if the grade is appropriate for its environment. 304 is an economical and practical choice for most environments, but it doesn’t have the chloride resistance of 316. The slightly higher price point of 316 is well worth it in areas with high chloride exposure, especially the coast and heavily salted roadways. Each application for stainless steel has its own unique demands, and needs a stainless steel that’s up to the task.
304 stainless steel is the most common form of stainless steel used around the world, largely due to its excellent corrosion resistance and value. It contains between 16 and 24 percent chromium and up to 35 percent nickel, as well as small amounts of carbon and manganese.
The most common form of 304 stainless steel is 18-8, or 18/8, stainless steel, which contains 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel.
304 can withstand corrosion from most oxidizing acids. That durability makes 304 easy to sanitize, and therefore ideal for kitchen and food applications. It is also common in buildings, décor, and site furnishings.
304 stainless steel does have one weakness: it is susceptible to corrosion from chloride solutions, or from saline environments like the coast. Chloride ions can create localized areas of corrosion, called "pitting," which can spread beneath protective chromium barriers to compromise internal structures. Solutions with as little as 25 ppm of sodium chloride can begin to have a corrosive effect.
